Spike / Fuel-Grade LNG

Spike LNG, also referred to as Fuel-Grade LNG, is a high-purity liquefied natural gas engineered specifically for direct fuel applications across industrial, commercial, and transportation sectors. It is produced by refining natural gas to remove moisture, sulfur compounds, carbon dioxide, heavy hydrocarbons, and other contaminants, followed by liquefaction at approximately –162°C.

This process results in a stable, high-energy, cryogenic liquid fuel with excellent combustion efficiency, consistent calorific value, and extremely low emissions. Spike / Fuel-Grade LNG is widely adopted as a cleaner alternative to diesel, furnace oil, LPG, and coal-based fuels.

Composition & Quality Profile

Fuel-Grade LNG consists predominantly of methane (CH₄), with trace quantities of ethane and negligible heavier hydrocarbons. Unlike pipeline-injection LNG, this grade is optimized for direct combustion and engine performance, not grid blending.

Typical Composition:
Methane (CH₄): 90–99%
Ethane (C₂H₆): 1–6%
Propane & heavier hydrocarbons: <1%
Nitrogen (N₂): <1%
CO₂: <50 ppm
Water (H₂O): <1 ppm
Sulfur Compounds (H₂S): <4 ppm

These specifications ensure:
* No corrosion or fouling of engines and burners
* Stable ignition and flame control
* Reduced maintenance and longer equipment life

Key Characteristics

1. High Methane Content
High methane concentration ensures uniform combustion, higher thermal efficiency, and minimal engine knocking.
2. Low Impurity Levels:
Ultra-low moisture, sulfur, and CO₂ prevent hydrate formation, corrosion, and emissions-related issues.
3. High Calorific Value:
Provides 45–55 MJ/kg, delivering more usable energy per unit compared to conventional liquid fuels.
4. Environment-Friendly Fuel:
Fuel-Grade LNG produces:
~25–40% lower CO₂ emissions than diesel
Up to 90% lower NOx emissions
Virtually zero SOx and particulate matter
5. Cryogenic Stability:
Maintains stable properties during storage and transport under cryogenic conditions, ensuring safe and predictable fuel behavior.

Storage, Handling & Safety

Spike / Fuel-Grade LNG is stored and handled using vacuum-insulated cryogenic tanks designed to maintain ultra-low temperatures. Safety systems include:

Pressure relief valves
Gas detection sensors
Emergency shut-off systems
Controlled boil-off gas management

LNG is non-toxic and non-corrosive, and only becomes flammable when vaporized and mixed with air within specific limits.
